What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number that relates weight and height to estimate whether a person is in a healthy weight range. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and is the screening tool most widely used by the WHO (World Health Organization) for population assessment. BMI is a screening tool — it does not replace a medical evaluation.

How to use this calculator

Enter your height in centimeters (e.g. 170 for 1.70 m) and your weight in kilograms. The result appears automatically along with its classification. Best for adults aged 18-65. Don't use it for children, pregnant women, or athletes with high muscle mass — BMI can give misleading results in those cases.

How BMI is calculated

The formula is simple: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). For example, someone weighing 70 kg at 1.70 m has BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2. The result is interpreted using the WHO classification table below.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI suitable for everyone?
No. BMI is a screening tool for healthy adults between 18 and 65. It's not reliable for children, teens, the elderly, pregnant people, or athletes with high muscle mass. In those cases, see a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.
What's a healthy BMI?
The WHO considers 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m² to be a healthy range. But the ideal number varies with age, sex, body composition, and health history. There is no single "perfect" BMI.
Does a high BMI always mean obesity?
No. BMI only accounts for weight and height — it does not distinguish fat from muscle. Athletes and muscular individuals can have a "high" BMI without excess body fat. For a true assessment, tests like bioelectrical impedance or DEXA scans are more accurate.
How can I lower a high BMI?
The most effective approach is a balanced diet with a moderate calorie deficit plus regular physical activity (cardio + strength training). Sustainable long-term changes work better than restrictive diets. Always consult a nutritionist or doctor before major changes.
Beyond personal health, what is BMI used for?
BMI is used in epidemiological studies, health insurance assessments, cardiovascular and diabetes risk evaluation, and as a screening tool in clinical visits. Despite its limitations, it remains the most widely used anthropometric indicator worldwide.
Can I use this calculator for a child?
We don't recommend it. For children and teens, BMI is interpreted on age- and sex-specific percentile charts (from WHO or CDC). Use a pediatric calculator or consult a pediatrician.
