About shoe sizing

Every country has slightly different conventions for how shoe sizes map to foot length. The most reliable common ground is the foot length itself in centimetres — every system below is just a different label for the same physical measurement. Variations between brands and lasts (the foot-shaped form a shoe is built around) often matter more than the system; treat any chart as a starting point, not gospel.

How to measure your foot

Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall. Mark the tip of your longest toe (it's not always the big one). Measure heel-to-mark in centimetres — that's the number to put in this calculator with the system set to "Foot length (cm)". Measure both feet at the end of the day; pick the larger.

Formulas

US Men → cm: approximately size + 18. US Women → cm: US-Men − 1.5, so cm + 16.5. UK → cm: approximately UK + 18.5 (UK runs about 1 size below US-Men). EU (Paris point): 1 size = 2⁄3 cm, so EU ≈ (cm − 18.33) × 1.5 + 2. Japan / Korea (Mondopoint): the size is just the foot length in cm.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the EU sizes always rounded?
EU sizes use the Paris point (2⁄3 cm), so they don't land on whole numbers in cm. Manufacturers offer whole sizes only, so we round to the nearest one.
Is there a perfect formula across systems?
No. Each chart is approximate, and different brands shift by 0.5-1 size from each other. Always try shoes on or check a brand's specific size guide for high-stakes purchases.
Do men's and women's shoes use the same lasts?
Often the same, especially in athletic shoes. Women's lasts can be slightly narrower in the heel and forefoot. The 1.5-size offset between US-M and US-W is a labelling convention, not a width difference.
What's Mondopoint?
It's the ISO standard: foot length in millimetres (or cm). It's used in Japan, Korea, in military boots, and in ski boots — the most honest sizing system because it's just your foot.
Should I size up for athletic shoes?
Many runners go up half a size for long runs because feet swell. For walking shoes, your normal size is fine if there's a thumb's width of room past the longest toe.
What about kids' shoes?
Kids' systems differ again (US Y, UK toddler, etc.) and aren't covered here. For children, measure foot length in cm and use the manufacturer's chart.
