Hashtag Counter
Count hashtags and check platform limits in one go.
Why count hashtags?
Each platform handles hashtags differently. Instagram allows 30 and most performance studies put the sweet spot between 5 and 11. LinkedIn caps the useful number at 5 and demotes posts that look hashtag-stuffed. X/Twitter has no formal limit, but engagement nosedives past two. Pinterest indexes 20 max. TikTok is technically unlimited yet rewards focused, niche tags over a wall of them. This counter scans your text once, returns the count, deduplicates, and shows a per-platform compliance chip — so a single caption can be reused across networks without breaking any of them.
How to use this tool
Paste the post once. Read each platform chip to see if you're inside its sweet spot.
- Paste the entire caption — emojis and line breaks are fine.
- Look at the count and the per-platform chip.
- Trim down for LinkedIn or X if you're sharing the same caption everywhere.
- Watch the duplicates count — repeating the same hashtag is wasted character budget.
How the count works
The tool extracts every word that begins with # and contains letters, numbers or underscores — matching how each platform parses hashtags.
Match pattern: /#[\p{L}\p{N}_]+/g
- Unicode-aware: matches accented characters and non-Latin scripts.
- Case-insensitive for deduplication: #Marketing and #marketing count once for unique tags.
- A hashtag must touch the # symbol — '#' followed by a space is ignored.
Platform limits and sweet spots
'Limit' is what the platform technically accepts; 'sweet spot' is what tends to perform best in current studies.
| Platform | Limit | Sweet spot |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 5–11 | |
| X / Twitter | Unlimited | 1–2 |
| TikTok | Unlimited | 3–5 |
| 5 | 3–5 | |
| 20 | 4–8 | |
| Unlimited | 1–3 | |
| YouTube | 15 | 3–5 |
Limits as published by each platform; sweet spots from Hootsuite, Later and Sprout Social benchmark studies.
Frequently asked questions
Are hashtags still effective in 2026?
On Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, yes — they are still a discovery surface. On X and Facebook, they're mostly cosmetic. Always test against your own audience before assuming.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?
Instagram itself recommends 3–5; recent studies show 5–11 performs best. Hitting all 30 used to work — today it correlates with weaker reach.
Does LinkedIn really cap hashtags at 5?
It's not a hard cap, but LinkedIn's algorithm visibly demotes posts past 5 hashtags and treats anything over 10 as low-quality.
Should I put hashtags in the comment or the caption?
On Instagram, the algorithm reads both equally. Move them to the first comment if you find the caption visually cluttered — engagement is the same.
Are duplicate hashtags counted twice?
Yes — Instagram and TikTok count #Marketing and #marketing as the same tag, but they consume two character slots in the post body. The duplicates counter shows that waste.
Can I use punctuation inside a hashtag?
Only underscores. Anything else (period, dash, comma) ends the hashtag. #brand-new becomes #brand on every platform.
