Cat Age Calculator
Convert your cat's age into human years using the modern feline aging curve — and see exactly which life stage they're in.
What is a cat age in human years?
Cats grow up much faster than humans during their first two years, then settle into a steadier aging rate. The old "multiply by 7" rule is wildly inaccurate — a one-year-old cat is closer to a fifteen-year-old human, not a seven-year-old. The modern feline aging model, used by veterinarians and the AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners), assigns 15 human years to the first cat year, another 9 years to the second, and roughly 4 human years for every cat year after that. So a 2-year-old cat is about 24 in human years, a 5-year-old is around 36, and a 12-year-old cat is comparable to a 64-year-old person. Lifestyle matters too: indoor cats commonly live 13 to 17 years, while outdoor cats average just 2 to 5 due to traffic, predators and disease. This calculator uses the modern formula and tells you which life stage — kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior or super-senior — your cat is in, so you can adjust food, vet visits and play accordingly.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your cat's age — Type the age in cat years (decimals are fine — 0.5 for a six-month-old kitten works perfectly).
- Pick indoor or outdoor — This affects the average lifespan reminder, not the human-age conversion. The aging curve itself is the same.
- Read the human equivalent — The big number is the human-year equivalent. Below it you'll see the matching life stage and approximate years remaining.
- Use the stage to plan care — Mature, senior and super-senior cats benefit from twice-yearly vet checks, joint support and senior-formula food.
The cat-age formula
Year 1 = 15 human years. Year 2 adds 9 more, so a 2-year-old cat ≈ 24 human years. Each year after = +4 human years. Formula: human_age = 24 + (cat_age − 2) × 4 for cats older than two. The first two years of a cat's life pack in childhood, puberty and early adulthood, which is why the curve is so steep up front.
Cat life stages
Modern feline veterinarians divide a cat's life into six stages. Knowing the stage helps you tailor diet, exercise and preventive care.
| Cat years | Human years | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 | 0–15 | Kitten |
| 1–2 | 15–24 | Junior |
| 3–6 | 28–40 | Adult |
| 7–10 | 44–56 | Mature |
| 11–14 | 60–72 | Senior |
| 15+ | 76+ | Super-senior |
